More Bread Please!

My husband's mother is great and she has always been a very resourceful lady. She raised her kids on homemade bread and cut all of their hair herself - all 7 of them - well 8, if you include their dad. Those are two areas that my husband has given me lots of encouragement in because #1 he hates to pay for a haircut and #2 he LOVES homemade bread. I can't say that I am great at either one but I have worked on these skills over the years and I may be improving. Frankly, I can't imagine wasting two good pieces of homemade bread that I labored over on my 1st grader's sack lunch - especially because sandwich bread at Fry's is so cheap - but I may be changing my tune. Cutting the darn homemade bread is one of the challenges of truly enjoying a slice. My sister in law, who has also been encouraged by her husband to bake bread (our husbands are brothers - she cuts hair too) has revolutionized the process. The Bread Slicer! She found me one at Savers for $0.99 and it may just change my life - and my husbands. It is kind of like a mitre box for bread. Pop out the electric knife that usually just sits around collecting dust and we now can get several beautiful, even slices of bread from one loaf. I was so amazed at how commercial my meager loaves of bread looked when I was done. No more crumbly, skinny-at-the-bottom, fat-on-the-top pieces of bread for us! And I may just let my son take some homemade bread to school on occasion.

Your bread looks delish! I've tried homemade bread, and mine always falls flat... boo hoo.

I'm so impressed!

Oh, and I forgot, I do know your inlaws-- and if you are in Dawn's ward, you know my sister and her husband-- Amanda and Brian Cutler.

I wish that I wanted to make bread. It just seems like SUCH a process. Joan raised 8 kids on homemade bread. She had a bread day. Maybe that's what scares me away. A WHOLE day. (I don't think I'll have 8 kids, but I really like bread) That just seems like such a waste when I could get one for 99 cents. Maybe I just need a lesson. (hint, hint) Looks so yummy though!!

We've found that a long serrated knife is best for bread that has cooled. But for hot bread, the ONLY way we've been able to cut it successfully every time is with our electric knife. Its a breeze that way. (We go through probably 8 loaves of homemade bread a week)
